The first thing you should expect from your tools is that they will last a lifetime. In fact, if you get a nice quality set of fireplace tools, they should last a lifetime and then some. Wrought iron tools from a century or so ago could easily be used today if they were or are well taken care of. Another thing to consider is what you actually get when you get a new set of tools.
In most cases, you will get a set of four tools and a stand of some kind. Usually, this will be sold as a “5 Piece Fireplace Tool Set”. They consider the fifth piece the stand. In any event, the tools include a poker, shovel, broom and fireplace tongs. The shovel also acts as a scooper or tray to sweep the ashes into when cleaning up after a few fires.
