I should have done a bit more research before buying my sheer curtain panels for my kitchen. Like a fool, I figured that this was a simple matter of measuring your window and buying material to match. So I measured from the top of the window frame to the bottom, and then from left to right, and drove down to my window treatments store thinking I was so clever. I bought the fabric and a curtain rod, come home to install it, and then realised my mistake.
When buying sheer curtains, you want to achieve something that is called “gather”. This means that you need to buy a lot more material than the width of your window, so that when it is hung, it naturally loops, giving you a fullness and a little added privacy. Ideally you should buy three times the width of your window. Next time I’ll be doing a little more reading before reaching for my purse.
