Bathrooms are the newest final frontier in home decorating – we’ve pretty much covered our living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms and every other room in the house, and made them stylish havens we love to inhabit. No wonder red curtains are popping up in bathrooms everywhere as we seek to add color and life to the room!

One of the best things about the modern bathroom is that it is pretty much a blank slate! Unless someone has ordered a funky colored bathtub and it’s now yours to worry about, you can use just about any type of accessories in the bathroom and get away with it. If you’re tired of hearing about blue and green bathrooms, then you’ll be thrilled to find that red can be an effective color.

If you’re thinking about using red window curtains in the bathroom, there is really just one thing to worry about, and that is color bleed. Bathrooms are moist, steamy places, and the last thing you want to do is end up with pink walls or a patch of pink tile because dye has leached from your lovely new curtains! To ensure your curtains are colorfast, check labeling and look for something that is machine washable. Wash your curtains before you hang them up, and be certain that they’re finished bleeding before you finish washing them. Running a double wash cycle usually takes care of the worst of it.

There are plenty of advantages to beautiful red curtains to offset that one problem. Red curtains add a lot of contrast to a white bathroom and can give it more of a personality than continuing a white theme provided that you add touches of red rather than overpowering the room with the color. You can cover a window, or you can enjoy red shower curtains specially designed to make your bathroom seem like an opulent place to be, but probably not both to give the best effect.

While white walls are nice, consider using a caramel color or even a sage green paint to offset your red curtains. You’ll create a warm environment, that, when completed with some well chosen artwork, will make your bathroom a place you’ll enjoy a lot more.
