Plaid Golf Pants | American Cut or Euro Cut?

With the advent of fitness in the golf game, a lot of its stars are looking a lot more like they just walked out of a GQ photo shoot than out of the corner tavern down the street. Many fewer pot bellies, many more six packs. With the advent of this occurrence, many golf shops are now beginning to offer two types of pant cut for all you golfers out there, particularly when you get to the more fashionable types of golf pants, like plaid golf pants, American cut and European cut.

But which should you choose? Today we’re going to help you decide.

First, the American cut. As you might expect, this type of mens golf pant cut is a little bit more relaxed. There is a little bit more room throughout the thigh and calf, producing a more billowy type of look. To give you an idea of who wears the American cut of golf pant, look no further than anyone over the age of 30 (these guys will also typically be wearing a mock golf shirt, which I abhor). Almost all wear them. Some would say these are more comfortable than the European cut, but few would disagree that they typically look two sizes too big on whoever wears them.

The European cut, on the other hand, is usually described as more of an athletic cut. You’ll find many plaid golf pants in the European style, because those are typically the people that wear them – and 20 something Americans who care about style. These are cut closer to the body and typically have a slit at the end of the pant so they stylishly fit around the golf shoe. If you’re out of shape, however, these probably aren’t for you. People will be able to see your problem areas.

I think your decision on pant should be based on your body type. Please don’t wear Euro cut pants if you are out of shape, and if you are in shape, show it off. The decision is up to you. But remember, golf isn’t just about the shots, it’s about looking good too.
