NFPA Rules for Fireplace Inserts

More and more homeowners are becoming enthusiastic about fireplace inserts efficiency and are thinking hard about installing one in their homes. If you are among those who want to put an insert inside your current fireplace, be sure to read the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) rules for fireplace inserts. The NFPA prohibits the quick fix of simply shoving the insert into your existing fireplace and letting the smoke find its way up the chimney. Instead, you’re required to install a continuous connection between the exhaust opening of your insert and the beginning of your chimney flue. This keeps harmful creosote from building up in the nooks and crannies between where your insert leaves off and your chimney begins. Although this might seem like a lot of extra work, it’s a small price to pay for avoiding the scary experience of having a chimney fire in your home.
