Black Pearls or Tahitian Pearls

Many consumers who are fond of pearl necklaces will talk about “black pearls”, when in reality, they may be referring to pearls from the South Sea area around Tahiti and French Polynesia.  For the sake of argument, I believe all black pearls are those that come from Tahiti, and the reason is clear.  The only real pearl that comes from the oyster in a black or very dark color is in the South Sea.  While you may see other dark pearls, they are died after being harvested, thus making them non-naturally dark.

For those in market for high-quality pearls from the South Sea, remember to ask if they have been colorized or died after being harvested.  If they have, they aren’t true black pearls.
