Many people think that their acne scars will last forever, but this need not be the case. There are a number of ways in which the acne scarring can be treated to improve its appearance. The treatment which is most appropriate depends on the nature of the scarring, shallow scars usually being easier to treat than deeper ones.
For shallow scars or discolouration, microdermabrasion or dermabrasion can be successful. These are relatively gentle procedures, and in fact home treatment kits for microdermabrasion can be purchased. Normally several treatments will be required over a period of time to achieve the best results.
Deeper acne scars will often need procedures such as chemical peels, subcision, or laser treatment. Deeper scars usually need to be treated by a dermatologist or other professional and home treatments are not very effective for this type of scarring.
